RSHE - Relationships, Sex and Health Education

St. Augustine's Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE) and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) curriculum provides a virtue-based education, rooted in Catholic teachings, to prepare students for a successful adult life. The programme fosters personal attributes such as kindness and integrity while developing resilience and the ability to form positive relationships. It equips children with essential knowledge regarding health, physical development and online safety, ensuring they understand how to report concerns. Additionally, students learn about the wider world, including money management and careers, to help them play an active, positive role in a diverse society. Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world and living their lives seamlessly on and offline. This presents many positive and exciting opportunities, but also challenges and risks. In this environment, children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. This is why RSHE was made compulsory in all primary schools in England .

St. Augustine’s utilises both the 'Jigsaw PSHE' programme and 'Life to the Full' programme by Ten:Ten Resources to deliver a comprehensive PSHE and RSHE curriculum within a Catholic context. These programmes meet all statutory requirements and are based on the ‘Model Catholic RSHE Curriculum,’ which is recognised for its good practice.

The Jisgaw PSHE curriculum programme is a mindful approach that brings together Personal, Social, Health Education, emotional literacy, social skills and spiritual development in a comprehensive scheme of learning. A lesson a week with the teaching resources included, helps teachers to focus on tailoring the lessons to their children’s needs and to enjoy building the relationship with their class, getting to know them better as unique human beings.

Teaching strategies are varied and are mindful of preferred learning styles and the need for scaffolding resources. Jigsaw is designed as a whole school approach, with all year groups working on the same theme (Puzzle) at the same time. This enables each Puzzle to start with an introductory assembly, generating a whole school focus for adults and children alike.

The Ten Ten curriculum programme is structured around several key principles:

  • Spiral Approach: Learning is designed to grow at age-appropriate stages each year, with each stage building upon the previous one.
  • Religious Foundation: The teaching is underpinned by the belief that our deepest identity is as a child of God, who is created, chosen and loved.
  • Structured Learning Stages: The programme covers four distinct stages: Early Years Foundation Stage (Nursery and Reception), Key Stage One, Lower Key Stage Two, and Upper Key Stage Two.
  • Core Modules: Within each stage, the curriculum is divided into three modules: Created and Loved by God (the individual), Created to Love Others (relationships), and Created to Live in Community (the local, national, and global world).

These modules are further broken down into specific units of work that utilise creative resources such as interactive videos, story-based activities, and classroom prayers to engage and inspire pupils.

For further details on the specific progression of topics across each year group, please refer to the whole school curriculum map.

Please find our RSE school policy below. This was formulated in conjunction with parents, Governors and all other stakeholders after completing the required Consultation process. RSE has been taught here at St. Augustine's since it was made a statutory requirement in the Summer term of 2021.

The Role of the Parent

At St. Augustine's, we see parents and carers as the first educators of their children. We recognise the importance of working collaboratively in order to deliver a robust and broad PSHE and RSHE curriculum that responds to our own school context and needs. Ten:Ten resources are made with an understanding of the foundational role that parents and carers have in educating and nurturing their children on relationships and health matters.

The school ensures that parents are informed of the content throughout the year, and consulted to ensure the curriculum reflects the needs and values of our school community. Parents can access the Ten:Ten parent portal, for a more in depth look at the resources we use, by following the link below.

Information for parents- Click here to access the document above.

The RSHE consultation process took place in the Autumn term of 2026, as the revised statutory guidance introduced changes to the RSHE curriculum. A letter was sent to parents to explain the consultation process as well as a questionnaire for parents to complete before the process was completed. RSHE was statutory to teach in all primary and secondary schools in the Summer term of 2021 and is fully embedded across our school.
